5 plants suitable for the Kilinochchi sun
1. Chilli: Starts fruiting in 45 days. Needs plenty of sun. Best for terraces.
2. Tomato: Choose a local country variety. Tolerates sun well.
3. Araikeerai / Sirukeerai (greens): Harvest in 20 days. You can pluck daily.
4. Okra: Continuous fruiting for 3 months. Needs less water.
5. Brinjal: Purple brinjal suits the Kilinochchi soil.
5 steps to set up a terrace garden
Step 1: Choose the location
A spot on the terrace that gets sun from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. The east–south side is best.
Step 2: Prepare the soil mix
Red soil 2 parts + sand 1 part + farmyard manure 1 part + a little coir fibre. Mix well and fill the grow bags.
Step 3: Sowing
Press the seeds about 1 cm deep and lightly spray water. Once every morning is enough.
Step 4: Water management – the Kilinochchi trick
1. Plastic-bottle drip: Make a small hole in a 1-litre bottle and bury it near the plant. Filling it once every 2 days is enough.
2. Mulching: Cover the soil with coconut fronds or straw. It retains moisture and prevents the sun from scorching the soil.
Step 5: Natural pest repellent
For 10 litres of water, mix 30 ml neem oil + a little soap powder and spray once every 15 days. Mealybugs and aphids won’t come.
30-day maintenance schedule
• Week 1: Water every morning. Seeds will germinate.
• Week 2: Remove weeds. Spray 3% Panchagavya solution—available at the Kilinochchi Livestock Board.
• Week 3: Insert a stake and tie the plant. Flowering will begin.
• Week 4: First harvest! You can pluck greens. Chilli buds will appear.
3 secrets from a Kilinochchi gardener
1. Don’t water in peak sun: Water only from 6–8 a.m. or 5–6 p.m. Otherwise the plant will get scorched.
2. Fish amino: Take fish waste from the Kilinochchi market, add water in a bucket, and soak for 10 days. Dilute that water 1:10 and pour it—plants will grow lush.
3. Shade net: Chithirai–Aavani sun is harsh. A 50% shade net (3 metres) costs 600 rupees. Buy it next month.
Where to get help?
1. Department of Agriculture, Kilinochchi: Free advice, subsidised seeds. Phone: 021-2285670
2. Grama Sevakar (village officer): Ask about the home garden scheme. Sometimes they give grow bags free.
3. YouTube: Search “Kilinochchi terrace garden”. Local farmers have uploaded videos.
Conclusion
An expense of 1,000 rupees and 20 minutes of work a day. In return, a saving of 2,000 rupees a month, poison-free food, and peace of mind. Let’s turn the Kilinochchi sun into a blessing. Start today by planting a chilli plant.
