A Phase I clinical trial spanning Shanghai, Boston and Cambridge has demonstrated that adeno-associated virus delivery of a functional OTOF gene restores near-normal auditory response in children with congenital genetic deafness. Six of seven participants showed clinically significant hearing recovery within 26 weeks, with no serious adverse events. The therapy is now advancing to Phase II.
